Send to tools

Clicking on the item's blue linked text brings us to a page with additional item information. Underneath the brief record will be a section labeled "send to" that contains a list of icons. These icons are tools that allow you to perform different functions with the item record.

The first tool that is very important is the citation tool (icon that looks like a quotation mark). This tool allows you to generate citations for the item in MLA, APA, Chicago, and Harvard Styles. To generate a citation you will:

  1. Click on the citation iconscreenshot of the send to tools panel in the library catalog. Contains the tools: export bibtex, export RIS, refworks, endnote, easybib, citation, permalink, print, email. The citation icon is outlined in red and labeled with a number 1.
  2. Choose your citation style
  3. Copy the generated citation to the clipboard (can paste in a Word document)
  4. double check the citation against a style guide (example: this generated APA citation is formatted incorrectly). screenshot of send to tools in catalog with citation tool selected. The list of citation styles on the left side is outlined in red and labeled with a number two. To the right of the list is a generated APA citation for "I know why the caged bird sings." Underneath the citation is a blue "copy to clipboard" link outlined in red and labeled with a number 3.

The permalink tool allows you to generate a permanent link back to a specific item record. When using databases and other discovery platforms like library catalogs, it's important to use permanent links, as links from the browser bar at the top of the page can be temporary and change.  A permanent link guarantees that you will be linked back to the particular item that you were looking at.

To generate a permalink click on the permalink icon (last in top row) under the "send to" section heading. Then, click on the "copy the permalink to clipboard" text underneath the generated link. You can then paste this link into a document or email for later reference.

The email tool under the send to heading allows you to email the item record to yourself or others. To email the item record you will:

  1. Click on the e-mail button with the envelope icon (last button in list).
  2. Enter your email in the "to:" field.
  3. Hit the send button underneath the box where you entered an email address.

The little pin icon (pin tool) allows you to save items to your favorites list in your library account. To take advantage of this tool you need to sign in to your library account, which can be done from the blue menu bar at the top of the catalog by clicking on the "sign in" button on the far right hand side.

To pin items, click on the pin icon on the upper right-hand side of the item record. This can be found both in the record in the results list,
